Health and Safety
Accident/Illness
Despite the best efforts, accidents will and do happen. Minor injuries will be attended to at school. If injuries are of a more serious nature, parents will be notified and advised as to whether or not their child should seek medical attention.
Children who are too ill to go outside for recess are too ill to be at school. This is especially true in the cases of severe colds, for children function below potential, provide a source of infection for other children, and would recuperate faster at home with rest. In the case of a student becoming ill at school, it is school policy that parents are contacted and the child is sent home.

Attendance
Reporting absences:
To ensure the safety and well-being of our students, we ask that all parents contact the office directly every time your child is away due to illness, vacation or appointments.
Late arrivals:
All students arriving late in the morning need to get a late slip from the office upon arrival.
Student sign-out:
If you will be taking your child off-campus whether for lunch, doctor’s appointments, etc. YOU MUST sign your child out at the school office.
Medication
Prescription Medication:
Administering medication during school hours is the sole responsibility of the parents or a Suzuki Charter School staff designate when parental permission is given. Medication can be given to a student by a designate only when a parent authorization form has been filled out and when the medication comes in the original container including the prescription label. All prescription medication is to be kept in the office (or fridge if needed). Having children self-administer medicine may not be safe and could lead to medication inadvertently being consumed by another student. Please complete and submit the medication permission form below and return to the office.
Medication Administration Parent Permission Form
Epi-pens:
For those students who need epi-pens, we ask parents to send their children to school with a fanny pack or other storage so that students with anaphylactic reactions will carry the epi-pens on them at all times.
Food and Allergies
Birthdays:
We celebrate birthdays in class, but if you want to bring something to give to the other students, do not bring food items. Non-food items are fine, such as stickers, pencils, etc.
Nut Allergies:
We have students attending Suzuki Charter School who have LIFE – THREATENING ALLERGIC REACTIONS TO NUTS AND PEANUTS. For the safety of all students at Suzuki Charter School, please make sure you are sending snacks that contain NO NUTS, PEANUTS OR NUT PRODUCTS. Many products indicate, “May contain traces of nuts.” These products are fine to bring to school, as long as they do not list nuts, peanuts or any nut products as an actual ingredient. Please read labels carefully; it is critically important.
Animal Allergies:
In addition, please refrain from bringing pets into the school. Students and staff have pet allergies and the presence of animals in the school or classroom could compromise their health.
School Emergencies
Evacuation:
If ever we were in a situation to evacuate, the school has made arrangements with St. Gabriel Elementary School, 5540-106 Avenue 9420, to house our students until parents are notified and able to pick up their children.
Emergency Response:
Students and staff practise lockdown and fire drills in case of emergency throughout the year.
Footwear
For safety purposes, students are to wear supportive shoes in school at all times. “Heelies” are not permitted in school. Your child is asked to have two sets of footwear: one for outside wear and another for inside use. Scuff proof athletic shoes are needed for gym. Parents, kindly help your children remember to remove outside shoes and carry them to their designated boot rack. To keep our hallways clean and dry and we ask you to set a good example.
Personal Property
Suzuki Charter School is not responsible for personal property of students. All supplies, instruments and cases, lunch kits, knapsacks, shoes, boots, and coats should be marked to identify lost articles. A lost and found box is located at the east end of the school. Please check it periodically. Unclaimed articles are given to charitable organizations when the box is full.
